Textual analysis
Before I create my own Thriller poster and magazine colours i will first analyse both posters and magazines. First i am going to analyse three different movie magazine covers.
Magazine conventions
Magazines tend to stick to typical conventions and formats, below i have listed some typical visuals we experience on magazine covers:
Banner: A banner is a rectangle of colour with writing placed on top of it.
Main cover line: The main cover line is the main title, the main aspect being asvertised (e.g The title of a movie)
Main cover line: The main cover line is the main title, the main aspect being asvertised (e.g The title of a movie)
Cover line: A cover line is a piece of writing placed on the magazine cover.
Pug: A pug is like a sticker that usually has writing placed on top
Main image: The main image is usually of the key character within the film and is the most notable image.
Masthead: The masthead is the name of the magazine and is almost always at the top of the page.
Most magazine companies stick to a basic format and usually always follow the rule of thirds. The rule of thirds is where the cover is cut into thirds both horizontally and diagonally. Usually within the top horizontal third we see the masthead, the second third we see the main cover line and the final third we see coverlines and advertisements. Horizontally the middle third is where the main image will appear, The other two thirds either side contain the cover lines and pugs. I have explained this with a visual aid below:
Empire:
Empire magazine is the largest selling movie magazine in the UK. It follows a typical format. The rule of thirds is almost always used, the mast head is always in the same place as well as the price and date. Again the masthead is always in the same font and almost always red. Typical conventions of a magazine cover include banners, cover lines, mastheads, pugs and images. Below i have annotated the 'Inception' cover for Empire magazine.
I feel this cover works perfectly. There is a clear cut colour scheme of black grey and red making the cover look tidy and professional but also thrilling as the red represents danger/blood and the black and white/blue futuristic background makes Leonardo look very secretive and encourages the audience to read the magazine/watch the film. I would like to incorporate this into my magazine cover. The image is also put in black and white fitting to the background and the text. The use of a black and white image enhances the thrilling feel as it makes the image seem more serious and sharp but also more mysterious. The red text stads out largely on the background making the magazine intriguing.
The cover lines are in a black text and a simple font to fit the covers theme however it is at a slanted angle. By putting the text in this format i feel it makes Leonardo seem that he is of power, it creates an illusion of him standing forward. However when looking at Inceptions adverts and posters multiple times an image of a city being twisted or falling is used. Therefore the way the cover line is presented can represent the city and in some abstract way do kind of look like buildings and city, almost like skyscrapers.

The man in the image used also works well as he is dressed in smart attire with a gun in hand and a very stern face. He looks very smart and almost very dangerous in some sense, a typical male thriller character. This cover also uses rule of thirds and the typical masthead. There is also use of a pug, banner and website. Pugs and banners help to make the cover look more interesting and advertise parts of the maagzine in more creative ways than just the normal typical text. The cover overall fits the typical conventions and i feel is very well done in terms of looking professional and successful.

Total film is another big movie magazine that too has its typical conventions. For a more in depth look at what the magazine is about here i have attached URL http://www.totalfilm.com/ The masthead and lay out too follows a typical convention. Below i have annotated the typical conventions on the cover that advertises the film Jack Reacher.
The masthead is the same as it always is, the word 'total' being on top of the 'F', the same font in the same place. There is also use of pugs, banners and cover lines. Pugs and banners are used to give extra information about the magazine but in a more exciting manner. They make the text stand out, almost advertising their articles on their own cover.

Its not very clear in this image but it sticks to a colour scheme of gold, white and red. Having a set colour scheme to go with the film makes the magazine far more sharp. I feel that the colour scheme is great for the film, the colour red is representative of blood and danger adding a thrilling touch. The gold is reflective on the actual cover and adds a sense of excitement. It shines almost like an explosion would. The white text is used so that there is not too much colour going on making the cover look untidy, it is a basic colour.
The image used is also very successful in terms of being thrilling. Notice the gun in hand, the leather jacket and blood splats. The characters face is very stern and so shows that the film is rather tense and the character is clearly strong headed. The leather jacket also shines slightly fitting into the gold colour scheme.
The image of the character is also very typical of the thriller genre. The man is dressed in dark colours, he has the typical build ( most likely tall, muscly( and the strong facial expression.

Sight and sound:
Sight and sound is the second biggest movie magazine in the UK industry. This magazine is a lot different to the previous two that i have looked at. It takes a more simplistic approach and is more of a journalist read rather than a teen read. It is more informative and contains much longer reviews and fewer/smaller images.
I personally feel that the cover is not as intriguing and sharp, in comparison to the others, however the content is very good. This magazine too follows typical conventions of a magazine cover. We can clearly see that there is use of cover lines, a masthead and images. There is not much use of banners and pugs on this cover however it still works nicely and looks more simplistic and to the point.
The masthead remains the same in colour style and location. The image used is rather close up and is rather thrilling. This image has also been put into black and white. By doing this the images is more chilling and could almost be likened to an old police mugshot. Notice the twisted look on the boys face (left) and the contrast from the seriousness of the other boy (right). I like the way that the gun is blurred slightly out of focus. It highlights the fact that there is a gun but keeps the audience to focus more on the characters and their expression. The colour scheme of this cover is clearly black, white and red. However the main cover line is in blue. This helps to make the cover line stand out more than all the other text.

Movie posters conventions
Movie posters help to advertise the production further. They can be found in all sorts of forms such as magazines, newspapers, bus stops, buses themselves, billboards and so on.
Inception:
The first movie poster i have looked at is of the film Inception. Below i have annotated two of the posters that were released. I have done two on the same campaign as one is more of a teaser advert than the other so i thought it would be useful to look at the conventions and differences.
The teaser trailer includes some poster conventions. There is presence of a tag line 'your mind is the scene of the crime', title and a small amount of information. This poster is different from a full film poster as it does not give too much away. It does not tell the audience what the film is about when the film will be released it just gives the audience an introduction to the upcoming promotion of the film.
The colours used fit to the coulor scheme of the whole campaign. The futuristic blue scheme has been used on all the posters, adverts and magazine covers for the movie. It has an established theme and is consistently used to make it clear to the audience that they are all advertising the same movie. The image is of a city which is clearly where the movie is set. This is the only thing we can learn from this poster about the film. The title is very cleverly written. The letters are formed using buildings.
The use of the tag line links all the adverts and posters together. It is almost like a certified slogan for the movie. A poster reading simply just the tag line, 'Your mind is the scene of the crime', can be recognised as the film 'inception' as it is so publicised.

Below is a poster for the same film that is far more advanced and follows more conventions. The poster below gives away more of the film.
We are presented with a proper image that involves some action highlighting the genre. The same tag line is also present making the posters flow nicely. We are also given a vague release date. The colour scheme for both of the adverts is of blues and greys and again makes the posters flow nicely when released. It has its own personal stamp, it is obvious that the adverts are for both the same film. The poster below shows that the genre is a thriller more as we witness an action packed scene which is at a canted angle making the audience feel very disorientated, this adds a thrilling feel.
Taken:
The second poster that i have analysed is of the film Taken. Again it follows forms and conventions.
There is a tag line quoted from the film itself. This has an effect of creating a fiercely dangerous character, the line reads '...he will kill them'. We learn that the film is of the thriller genre and we can note that there will be some action occurring. It also allows the audience to gather an understanding of the film and decide as to whether or not its their kind of genre.
There is presences of an image of the main character giving the audience some information. From this image we can see clearly that the film is a thriller as the man is dressed in all black with a leather jacket over top, almost like an aganet or spies attire. He also has a gun in hand indicating action and highlighting tension.
The colour scheme is grey and black and again adds a cold thrilling feel to the poster. The image of the character stands out the most for many reasons, one being that it takes center stage and that there is not many distractions from him in the background and another being that the character is the darkest aspect of the poster. Doing this we can conclude that he is of importance and that maybe that he is hiding something or that there is more to him, almost like a dark horse. With my knowledge of the film this can be confirmed. Within the actual film we learn that he is very dangerous but also at the same time he is very emotional in terms of his daughter and their relationship, he has a caring side.
The starring actors name is present as well as the title of the movie and the release date, these are all informative pieces of text and are needed to allow the audience to know when to watch this film and what it is called. Notice how the title is in the same font style as the title that appears in the trailer? This is to ensure people recognise that they go together and make the campaign more sharp and professional.

Skyfall:
I myself feel that this poster works extremely well in advertising the movie. All the important conventions are there; the main image, the title and the release date however it is very simplistic.
The title is in its typical font along with the '007' logo. This is done to help create a clearer and sharper campaign. There is use also of a billing block towards the bottom of the poster, this is done to give more information of the film and who helped to create it. Allowing the audience to make a conclusion as to whether or not they like the film based on the company and producers previous work.
I really like this poster as not too much is going on in it however it gives away all the key details. I really like the way the image is used. I like how we only see the back of the character however we all know who he is. So his identity is not needed. I like how he takes up almost the whole image, highlighting his power and effect, over his shoulders we can see a gloomy image of a city. This creates an understanding of the setting and also the character. The fact that we can not see his face may indicate that he is very good at hiding his identity and his presence. In other words he is very sneaky. The image can also indicate that people underestimate his ability and think that they can defeat him.
The colour scheme is very dull, it consists of blues and blacks and adds an eerie feel to the advert. It conveys a sense of gloom and danger.
Teaser trailer textual analysis
Title: The Bourne Legacy
Director: Tony Gilroy
Year: 2012
Teaser trailer:
Narrative:
This thriller is about a field operative belonging to operation outcome, a department of defense. The department of defense specalises and utilizes experimental pills that were created to enhance physicality and mentality of its consumers. Cross (the main character) is a participant in one of these operations. However information was gathered by a journalist and the media of the ops occurring. Therefore the head of the operations decided that it would be best to end all ops occurring and make the participants 'dissapear' in other words dispose of them. In an attempt to kill Cross, potential evidence to the media, he escapes. He returns to a doctor whom was prescribing the medication he was taking to continue the course when suddenly they are both targeted, however again Cross and the doctor manage to escape. From here on out they are on the run.
Enigma codes:
Roland Barthes put forward the idea of enigma codes. Enigma codes is a theory that suggests a text (whether that be television, film, a poster...) portrays a mystery to draw an audience in, and questions the piece of work. For instance, a murder mystery will often not reveal the identity of the murderer until the end of the story, which poses the question "Who is the murderer?". Within this trailer there are numerous enigma codes. The first being what is this man committing himself too? What programme is he giving his life and being too?. This arises many questions from the beginning intriguing the audience to watch the rest of the trailer and possibly the film. Another enigma code that we are presented with is why is the main character now being pursued? Why is he now posing a threat to the doctors? Who are these doctors? This is done through showing us an intimidated character grow to a confident character. We witness the character fighting off doctors as well creating a sense of curiosity. Another enigma code we face in this trailer is what is this character capable of? Clearly he poses some threat to either the programme or society but why? what has he done or could he do? Enigma codes are vital in creating reasoning in the audiences head as to whether or not it is worth going to view the full length film. Enigma codes are used within pretty much all trailers and are very important.
How the characters are established:
The main character Cross is established in a number of different lights. We witness him being controlled, we witness him experiencing fear and we also witness him possessing courage and strength. The trailer starts of with only showing parts of Crosse's face, there are lines going through his face preventing the audience to capture his full appearance, we do not see the whole of him until about a minute in and even then we still we only see the side of his face. I feel he was portrayed in this way for a number of reasons. One being that we, as the audience, are unaware of his full capability. Almost used as an obscure clue/subliminal message, as even Cross himself is unaware of his full ability due to him taking these enhancing medications. Another being that something could be missing from him or his life. The lines could portray the lack of strength he has and the need for this medication for him to reach his full potential.
When we are finally shown his whole face his expression looks rather stern and deep in thought. This could portray him as a tough character and maybe even a clever one too. He clearly does not lack concentration. This shot shows he observes what is concurring around him and that he is not easily fooled. Furthermore when we first see Cross' face with thick lines cutting through him
we can see that his face has some form of injury/imperfections. He has tiny markings that could be either grazes, cuts or even bruises. By presenting him in this light to begin with we can draw a conclusion, as the audience, that he has clearly faced some form of conflict and been hurt along the way. Indicating that he may not be the best of fighters or the strongest of people. By doing this at the beginning it helps to portray him as weak and gives is a clear understanding of his motivations to join the operation. He must be trying to enhance himself physically and mentally and judging by this shot he clearly needs too. Further in the trailer we see Cross grow as a character. He starts off weak and vulnerable. We are shown shots of him expressing fear and progress to him expressing strength and courage. This indicates that throughout the film he, as a person, grows. Within the trailer we are also presented with other various characters however there is no large focus on
them. We are introduced to multiple doctors, agents, hitmen, important people of the operation. One character is shown a few times in this trailer. He is the man conversing with Cross at the beginning. He is portrayed as a man of importance, he is dressed smartly and speaks in a rough tone. The rough toned voice presents him as a 'wise' and important man, almost sounding like Chucrchill. The other characters we are presented with allow the genre to be identified it
Camera and editing techniques:
Different Camera and editing techniques are always used within trailers to make it more appealing to the audience and creates a sense of urgency and importance. For example fast cutting, canted angles, jump shots and so on. Within this trailer there is use of editing in terms of transitions. Between scenes a transition is used whereby black lines appear to increase and decrease in size over the top of a scene, almost like a blind.
There is also use of editing and colour grading. On multiple occasions scenes have been colour graded in a dull blue futuristic colour. This fits to the genre of the film, sci-fi thriller, and is an editing technique. I have provided a screen grab below showing this grading.
This trailer starts off fairly slow however about a third of the way through the pace quickens and we are presented with jump shots of different scenes filled with action and confrontation. By doing this it shows the action of the film and again produces codes of a thriller genre.
Use of sound:
Within this trailer there is use of both dialogue, diegetic, non-diegetic, off screen and on screen sound. Listening to the non-diegetic sound first it is clear that it has an impact of creating that thrilling suspense that is essential to make the trailer successful. The soundtrack starts off very low toned setting a chilling atmosphere. Suddenly every so often a violin is strung in a chilling manner in about sets of 3/4. After this we can hear the sound of some form of trumpet or trombone creating a bellowing, low tone eerie sound. This pattern is repeated through out the trailer and gradually increases in volume. The high pitched violin against the low tone trombone do not mix well together and therefore create a sense of uncertainty. I feel this soundtrack works well in creating suspense.
The dialogue within this trailer is also very important as it sets the narrative of the movie. Through the dialogue we learn that Cross is a well mannered man and is a dedicated person. He addresses the man in the meeting as 'sir'. Through the dialogue we learn that the film is about some form of programme/experiment on humans and therefore is vital for this trailer to work. We also learn key characteristics of characters through the words that they speak.
Intended target audience:
Looking at this trailer i feel the main target audience would be of sci-fi fans particularly teen to young adults. I feel this trailer is very intriguing to this group as for one; the film is a sci-fi thriller and two; It is very action packed and exciting. Its is obvious that the film is thrilling and action packed as we are presented wiht numerous scenes of altercations, explosions, shootings, weapons and so on. These kind of films and conventions are very intriguing to this age group as they are seen as to be 'cool'. Furthermore i believe, judging purely from this trailer, that the main character could be seen as pretty cool, especially by males. The character could almost be seen as a role model as he is ruthless and carries a chilled persona. We hear the man promise to devote himself to the programme, his life, almost like a person would do in the army, therefore being more appealing to males. I Personally i feel it appeals more to males rather than females due to the action, thrilling scenes and the science behind it.
Title: The Wolverine
Director: James Manghold
Year: 2013
Teaser trailer:
Narrative:
Wolverine finds himself in Japan facing a life or death battle with his nemesis that will leave him changed forever. Logan (main character) had been living a nomadic, homeless life after the accidental death of Jean Grey at his hands. He found himself hugging his girlfriend and reasling his blades had pierced her chest accidentally. Many years later after living in woodlands a Japanese women arrives at his cave telling him that a man from the war whom he once saved was on his death bed and asking to see him. When the pair meet the dying man offers to make Logan mortal (as he is immortal) but Logan turns down the offer and not long after the man perishes. Logan attends the funeral where a planned kidnapping of the deceased daughter occurs, Logan saves the young girl but when the men shoot at him he continues to react, he takes the girl to a place of safety but continuously are followed and found. They are almost 'on the run' together. This is where Logan finds himself facing a life or death battle.
Enigma codes:
The very first enigma code we face in this trailer is within the first few seconds. We are shown 2 different people with 2 very different expressions. The womens face looks as if she is aware of something that is about to occur and the mans face is an expression of worry. Straight away as an audience we are keen as to who these people are and why they are being brought together. women with a sword, flying privately, who clearly has money and/or power it creates a sense of question and confusion within the audience. Enigma codes are brilliant in capturing the audience attention as the audience wish to find the answer to the question and so watch the trailer and then go on to watch the film. Below i have print screened a few other enigma codes that occur within this trailer. I feel they work well and would like to include as many enigma codes as they have within their trailer.

How the characters are established:
Within this trailer there is a focus on two main characters. The first being the Wolverine himself and the second being the young Japanese girl. The Wolvering is established in multiple different ways. At first he is presented to us as a scruffy old homeless man which makes us as an audience underestimate him as a person aswell as his abilities. Throughout the trailer we see him grow as a character and establish who he is through dialogue. He is the Wolverine. We see him change from a scruffy long haired old man to a suited short haired, clean person. However the beard and hair that he is left will still portray aspects of a wolf like creature. We establish through this trailer that he is a man of power. We witness him being shot and his wound almost immediately dissaperaing, repairing itself. We also see scenes of him fighting which helps us again to establish his strength. We also learn through this trailer that he is struggling with some form of personal/emmotional issues.

The other character that is established within this trailer is the young Japanese women. Right from the very start we can establish that she knows how to fight/protect herself as when we first meet her she is carrying a samari sword. We Can also establish this characteristic through the fight scene we witness. We are shown the young women fighting off a man with a gun with a simple wooden stick. This amazes the audience as he is of clear weapon advantage, however we learn that she clearly had the advantage of skill. To the audience she can be easily classified as an important character as she is consistently present.
Camera and editing techniques:
Within this trailer there is again use of various different camera techniques and editing techniques. There is use of CGI and enhancement. We witness explosions, scenes of the Wolverines wound healing itself and a scene of a women pealing off her skin from her face. All of these scenes would have been either created through computer graphics and/or enhanced. I feel using these scenes help to create a sense of thrill and tensions. If i was able to incorporate this form of editing into my teaser trailer i would however unfortunately i do not have the resources. There is also use of fast pace cutting towards the end which is a camera technique and an editing technique. By doing this it allows the trailer to present the audience with multiple different scenes of the movie, create suspense and urgency. It create a thrilling atmosphere. These fast cut shots tend to involve fights and chases to add to this thrilling feel. Throughout the trailer there is use of different camera angles. Close ups are used as well as long shots, mid shots, crane shots and so on. By having a variety of shots the trailer comes across as more tense and suspenseful as the shots are continuously changing position breaking continuity. Close ups allow the audience to establish the characters emotions. Crane shots allow the audience to establish the setting and what is occuring. As you can see every shot is present for a reason as every shot has some form of effect be it informative, establishing and/or creating tension. The more tension created the more intriguing the film becomes to the audience. All of these techniques help to sell the film in its most attractive light. All the best scenes are included even if only for a second or two and the story line is briefly explained however the plot/finale still remains unclear making the audience want to go and watch the movie.

Use of sound:
This trailer uses both on-screen, off-screen, diegetic and non-diegetic sound. We hear sounds of fights and crashes, sounds of explosion and conversation. We can also hear non-diegetic music. All of these sounds are crucial in making this trailer successful. The dialogue helps to explain the story. The first piece of dialogue is off screen and speaks these words; 'it is an honor to meet the Wolverine'. This sound instantly indicates to the audience what movie is being advertised and what kind of movie it is. We also learn through dialogue that the Wolverine has saved lives and is 'immortal', this dialogue helps to explain why the wolverine is so feared and so dangerous. The dialogue, as i have said, helps to explain the narrative and story. There is alsp use of a sound bridge, the sound of the aeroplane is carried over to the scene of the women laying down inside the plane and to the scene of the iconic 'marvel' animation. This helps the scene flow together nicely to the animation otherwise the iconic animation seems randomly chucked in at an inconvenient time. The non-diegetic sounds help to create tension and suspense. It sounds like a low rumbling, clearly iconic of the thriller genre.

To the audience she can be easily classified as an important character as she is consistently present.Camera and editing techniques:
All the best scenes are included even if only for a second or two and the story line is briefly explained however the plot/finale still remains unclear making the audience want to go and watch the movie.Use of sound:
Intended target audience:
The intended target audience of this film would be of older teens to young adults. I feel this is portrayed through the trailer as the story line is rather intense and needs concentration. Also the scenes of thrilling action and fights would be seen as interesting and 'cool' to this age group. Furthermore the sci-fi side to this film would intrigue people with a first for creativity. I feel this trailer could be aimed at both girls and boys as we witness a women and male protagonist as well as male and female victims. Seeing an empowered women can appeal to girls as it did not happen often in movies however it is more present in today's movies. This could attract female attention.

Enigma codes:
Within this trailer there are multiple enigma codes to help make the film more intriguing to the audience and create a sense of curiosity. Within this trailer enigma codes are created through both the scenes presented and the dialogue. There are scenes of people giving chase to the main character. This creates an enigma code, a questioning, why is this man being chased? We also see a scene of two men jumping of a cliff, this scene creates a question of what possibly could be worse to make them jump? There are other scenes of fights, explosions and
chases which too form multiple enigma codes. Also through dialogue the trailer forms enigma codes. At the very beginning of the trailer a rough toned voice speaks 'you think your world is safe? In saying this the audience automatically question as to what is coming next and why their world may not be safe. By using a question it sets the question in the audiences head straight away. This is a great way to set an enigma code because straight away, without really showing much of the movie, the audience are already questioning the movie. There are numerous enigma codes within this trailer.
How the characters are established:
Within this trailer there two characters that are of focal point, the first being the protagonist and the second the antagonist. The antagonist is established through both dialogue and visual elements. We hear the antagonist speak in a rough tone at the very beginning of the clip stating the world is not safe and that he 'has returned'. By using this dialogue before even see the person talking we can already establish that he is a villain, not a good guy. We can also understand that he is very powerful and dangerous, this is learnt through him saying the world is at danger due to his return. When we first see this character (left) he is holding a gun
pointed towards the antagonist. He is also standing over him. His facial expression is very stern and twisted creating an understanding that he is not a very pleasant man. The gun and low angle shot represent his power over the other characters. We know this is the man whom was talking as as he says he is here for his 'vengance' this character is shown overpowering the good guy. Also through his attire these characteristics can again be established. The second character of focal point is quiet possibly the main character and clearly the antagonist. This is clear through his facial expressions and camera angles. We are shown two mid shots of this character from a high angle indicating that maybe he is not as strong or as advanced as the antagonist creating an enigma code of worry. Due to his attire of grey suit we can tell that he is attached to some form of group or programme and so may have much more help than imagained. We see various shots that show a facial
expression of worry that can again create a sense of worry for the audience. So far this character is not established as very strong however later in the trailer we see scenes of him punching another person and holding a gun towards someone. Now the gun scene we witness he again has an expression of panic but it is shot at a low angle. This shot type helps to portray that in actual fact he is not that weak at all and also that he very may well over power this antagonist. And that
he may be under estimates. I personally feel that when it comes to portraying this character it is actually very unclear as to what his characteristic are. This is a sense can be a good thing as it does help to create more curiosity in the mind of the audience, a long lived enigma code that could convince the audience to go and watch the full movie to understand his purpose.
Camera and editing techniques: There are multiple camera and editing techniques used in this trailer to make it more appealing. There is a range of camera shots and angles, there are explosions, futuristic moments and so forth. By using all of these things it helps to make the trailer much more exciting. Imagine a trailer that is shot in one long continuous shot with no enhancement to make the scene look more realistic and intriguing? It would be no where near as appealing in comparison to this trailer. In terms of camera techniques we see low angle and high angle shots which i have just spoke about, tracking shots, long shots, mid shots, close ups and so on. Below i have created a mood board of all these significant shot types. By using close ups we can establish the characters emotions and motives even. By using high and low angle shots is conveys levels of power and vulnerability. By using long shots we can establish the setting. All of these shots are there for a reason, either to create some understanding of the where abouts and occurrence of the scene or to help portray characteristics and emotion. In terms of editing techniques towards the end of the trailer there is use of fast cutting.
This is done to quicken the pace of the trailer
.
creating a more thrilling feel and sense of urgency. There is also use of editing in terms of explosions and so on. As you can see int he picture to the left the top right image is colour graded to fit the explosion that had just occurred. By doing this it allows a more thrilling feel as not all the shots are the same and basic. All of these editing techniques and camera techniques allow the trailer to be more successful in creating a thrilling responseWithin this trailer there is use of diegetic noon diegetic, voice over, sound bridge and on/off screen sounds. First looking at the dialogue, which is only spoke by the antagonist, we can learn that something bad is going to happen, it helps to set the story line. We learn that the world 'is not safe' and that someone will get their 'vengeance'. This setting up the story of the world be under attack. It also allows anyone who has seen the previous movies to make the link as to whom it is trying to achieve 'vengeance' before he is actually revealed. The dialogue is spoke in a steady tone not raising or lowering in volume. It is spoke in a rough way indicating that the main is not of nay good to any one and that he should be feared. The dialogue is a voice over multiple scenes which is eventually used in a similar way to a sound bridge. The voice speaks of his 'vengeance' as the clip of the antagonist is finally shown at a low angle. This dialogue helps to run the scenes nicely together creating a sense of continuity. There is used of diegetic sound such as explosions and crashes and so on but there is also use of non diegetic sound. The non diegetic sound is used to create a thrilling suspense. The non diegetic sound starts off very low in tone with an ambiance feel to it. It slowly grows into a rumbling with the occasional loud bang, almost like a drum. This part of the sound allows to create a sense of uncertainty within the audience resulting in tension and suspense. The sound slowly grows in volume and intensity and an occurrence of about seven banging sounds occur one after another as the scenes change. This helps to make the soundtrack fit well to what is actually being shown. About a third of the way the sound stops and everything goes silent for a second or two this again creates an un certainty in the audience and suspense as suddenly the sound has stopped. Why has it gone quiet? (again another enigma code) what is going to happen? all these questions begin, the silence gives time to take in what is going on when suddenly an explosions occurs breaking this silence and path of thought bringing the audience back to the reality of the film, the danger of the world of the film. This soundtrack works exceedingly well in creating suspense for this trailer.
Intended target audience:
The intended target audience of this movie would be again of old teens to young adults due to the explosions, fights and sci-fi side to it. The narrative is very science fiction and so is rather intellectual therefor needing levels of concentration hence why appealing more to older teens/young adults. I feel this kind of movie appeals more to males, however this is a very stereotypical view, this film can appeal to females too.
